What is H2O?

H2O is Horsham Symphony Orchestra's sister orchestra. It is friendly and inclusive, and for musicians who haven't played in an orchestra for some time (or ever before), or who don't want the heavier commitment of the main HSO orchestra.

The repertoire is all sorts of music from symphony movements and film scores to show tunes.  H2O's aim is to give local people an opportunity to play with like-minded musicians in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

We recommend players will feel comfortable within H2O if they're grade 5+ but the emphasis is most definitely on fun and enjoyment, so even if you feel you're still a little below that level, do get in touch, we'd love to hear from you -  the most important attribute is enthusiasm!

H2O typically performs once a year - a light-hearted Christmas concert with a retiring collection to raise funds for local charity.

Bring a music stand, a mug and small change* for the all-important cuppa and biscuit at rehearsal half-time! (*small change donations go towards the purchase of more milk / tea, coffee & biscuits. At the end of the season, we put excess donations back into the charity.)

FAQs

How good do I need to be to join H2O?

The suggested minimum standard is Grade 5 or equivalent. However, enthusiasm is more important than technical ability. Get in touch to find out more: membership@horshamsymphony.org.uk.

What ages play with H2O?

We welcome people of all ages to join in, from older children to older adults. For charity legal requirements, under-18s must be accompanied at rehearsals by a parent/guardian.

What instruments are welcome?

As well as the classic orchestral instruments, we welcome instruments that are not strictly orchestral – for example, tenor horns, saxophones and string basses are welcome. If you'd like to join, but worry H2O might not cater for your instrument, please email us: membership@horshamsymphony.org.uk.

Where does H2O rehearse?

H2O rehearsals are held weekly during school term time on Tuesday evenings, 7.30-9.30 pm, in the Dining Hall at Millais School in Horsham. You will need to bring your own music stand. There is a break for tea/coffee and biscuits and sometimes cake, so you might want to bring a mug and some small change for this.

What music will I be playing?

We play a range of different types of music, mainly classical but ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan suites to full symphonies. Don't worry if you've never played this kind of music before, that's all part of the fun! Music is usually provided, but we may ask you to print your own copy of some parts if there's not quite enough to go round.

Concerts

H2O performs approximately one concert per year, in St Mark’s Church, Horsham. This is usually in late November or early December, and there is lots of cake! The proceeds of the concert are donated a local charity.

Social events

H2O members are a very sociable group – we have an annual dinner in winter, join the HSO-H2O BBQ in summer, and have pub nights over the summer.

How much does it cost?

H2O subs are £30 per term, or £75 for the whole year (payable in September), or £30 p.a./£10 per term for those in full-time education. This covers the venue hire, music costs, etc. If you have full HSO membership, you do not need to pay any additional subs for H2O.

How do I join?

If you would like to join H2O, please get in touch via membership@horshamsymphony.org.uk. Remember to mention what instrument(s) you play and to approximately what standard.
